What is GYMGUYZ – Franchise Review?

GYMGUYZ is a mobile personal training franchise that brings customized fitness programs directly to clients in their homes, offices, apartment communities, parks, and other convenient locations. Instead of requiring customers to travel to a traditional gym, GYMGUYZ brings certified personal trainers and fitness equipment directly to them.

The mobile model eliminates the expense and complexity of operating a traditional brick-and-mortar fitness facility. Franchise owners focus on developing their territory, building relationships, generating clients, recruiting and managing trainers, and growing recurring personal-training revenue.

Services can include one-on-one personal training, semi-private sessions, group fitness, corporate wellness programs, and other on-site fitness services.

Company History

GYMGUYZ was founded in 2008 by Josh York with a simple idea: instead of requiring people to travel to a gym or personal trainer, bring the workout directly to them.

The concept developed into a mobile personal-training business in which certified trainers travel to clients with the equipment needed to provide customized workouts.

GYMGUYZ began franchising in the early 2010s and has expanded the concept into multiple markets. The brand now provides in-home and on-site personal training through a network of franchise and company-owned operations.

The company's recognizable branded vehicles serve as both transportation for trainers and equipment and as mobile advertising throughout the territory.

The model has also expanded beyond residential personal training into areas such as corporate wellness, group training and fitness programs delivered at businesses, residential communities and other locations.

Who This Is Best For

GYMGUYZ may be a strong fit for someone who enjoys working with people, building relationships and managing a team.

You do not have to be a certified personal trainer or come from the fitness industry. The owner is primarily responsible for developing and managing the business rather than personally conducting every workout.

This model may be particularly interesting for:

Corporate professionals looking to transition into business ownership

Sales and business-development professionals

Managers experienced in recruiting and leading employees

People passionate about health and wellness

Owners interested in a service business without a retail location

Entrepreneurs who enjoy networking and community involvement

Semi-absentee candidates who have strong management experience and understand that the business still requires active oversight

The ability to recruit and retain quality trainers will be an important part of building the business.

Training and Support

GYMGUYZ provides franchisees with initial and ongoing training designed to teach owners how to operate and grow the business.

Initial training includes virtual training sessions combined with in-person training at the company's headquarters.

Training covers areas such as:

Brand standards and customer service

Marketing and advertising

Lead and client management

Recruiting and managing employees

Sales strategies

Operations and scheduling

Safety and compliance

Financial management

Business planning

Preparing for launch

Ongoing support can include business planning, additional training, local market development, recruiting and onboarding assistance, webinars, operational resources and regular support calls.

Financing Options

Financing may be available to qualified franchise candidates through third-party lenders and franchise financing companies.

Depending on the candidate's financial situation, potential funding options may include:

SBA-backed business loans

Conventional business financing

Retirement-plan business funding, commonly known as ROBS

Portfolio or securities-backed financing

Home equity or other personal funding

A combination of personal capital and outside financing

Financing approval is never guaranteed and depends on the applicant's credit, liquidity, net worth, business plan and lender requirements.

Advisor Insight: Is GYMGUYZ – Franchise Review a Good Business?

An independent assessment from your franchise consultant

Steve Warres, Franchise Consultant

GYMGUYZ is interesting because it provides exposure to the fitness and wellness industry without requiring the large investment associated with opening a traditional gym.

I also like that the franchise owner does not need to be the personal trainer. This is really a people-management, marketing and business-development model built around fitness.

That distinction is important. Someone may initially look at GYMGUYZ and think, “I don't have a fitness background, so this isn't for me.” In reality, an experienced manager or salesperson may be better suited to owning the business than someone whose only experience is personal training.

The owner needs to build the customer base, recruit good trainers, develop local relationships and create a business that can eventually operate through a strong team.

What I Like Most
  • What I like most about GYMGUYZ is the combination of a recognized consumer need and a relatively lean operating model.
  • There is no expensive gym build-out and no need to maintain thousands of square feet of commercial space filled with fitness equipment. That removes one of the biggest fixed expenses associated with traditional fitness concepts.
  • I also like the convenience factor. Many people want personal training but struggle to consistently make time to travel to a gym. Bringing the trainer directly to the client's home, office or residential community removes that obstacle.
  • Another positive is the ability to develop multiple revenue channels. The business does not have to depend exclusively on individual residential customers. Corporate wellness, group training, residential communities and other partnerships can potentially expand the customer base.
  • Finally, I like that the owner can focus on building the business rather than being the product. You don't have to personally train every client to grow the company.
What to Understand Before You Invest
  • The biggest area I would investigate is trainer recruitment and retention. The quality of the trainers directly affects the customer's experience, and growing the business requires building a reliable team.
  • Owners also need to understand that this is not automatically a passive or hands-off franchise. Particularly during startup, the owner needs to be involved in marketing, networking, recruiting, sales and developing the local customer base.
  • I would also look carefully at the required local advertising expenditures and the overall fee structure rather than focusing only on the 7% royalty.
  • Most importantly, I would spend significant time reviewing the current Item 19 financial performance information and speaking with existing franchise owners.
  • The 2026 FDD provides financial performance information, but results vary considerably among locations. Understanding why some owners are substantially outperforming others would be an important part of the validation process.

Questions I Would Ask the Franchisor

How long does it typically take to build a consistent customer base?
How many trainers does a successful territory typically employ?
How difficult is it to recruit and retain qualified trainers?
What percentage of customers purchase recurring training packages?
What is the typical customer retention period?
Where do the most successful franchisees generate their leads?
How much should I realistically budget for marketing during the first year?
How much time does an owner typically spend working in the business during the first 6–12 months?
How realistic is semi-absentee ownership during the startup phase?
What separates the highest-performing territories from average-performing territories?
How important are corporate wellness and B2B accounts to profitability?
How many territories should an owner ultimately operate to build a meaningful business?
What are the most common reasons franchisees struggle?
What does trainer compensation typically look like in successful locations?

Bottom line: GYMGUYZ offers a different approach to the traditional fitness franchise. Instead of investing heavily in real estate, construction and a large gym facility, owners operate a mobile personal-training business that brings fitness directly to the customer.

The model may be particularly attractive to someone with strong sales, management, networking or business-development skills who wants to enter the health and wellness industry without personally becoming a fitness trainer.

I like the lower-overhead mobile structure, the growing demand for convenience and personalized services, and the ability to develop both residential and commercial customers.

However, this is still a business that must be actively built. Recruiting quality trainers, generating customers and creating strong local awareness will be critical.

For the right owner who enjoys developing people, building relationships and growing a service-based organization, GYMGUYZ is certainly a franchise worth investigating further.
